Lock It Down: The Best Locks for Your Money

Last year in England and Wales, there was an 11% increase in the number of robberies, but a 3% decrease in the number of burglaries.
Despite the decrease, you still can't be too careful. Our technology continues to develop, and with it comes more sophisticated locks. Unfortunately, more sophisticated locks create smarter burglars and hackers.
This raises the question of how we can stay safe in this world. Are certain locks less likely to be broken?
What are the best locks on the market? We'll give some examples in the paragraphs below.

1. Schlage Connect

The Schlage Connect may be pricey, but it comes with a lot of features. For instance, the touch screen is designed so it doesn't wear with use.
The Connect is also connected to wireless internet, so it can link with remote devices in your home. This allows you to lock and unlock the door remotely.
You can also create several different codes that are capable of unlocking the door, should you need them. In certain set-ups, this lock is even able to keep track of when the lock is interacted with, which could tell you if someone is trying to break in.
Aside from the cost, the biggest issues are that this lock is not compatible with Apple systems.

2. August Smart Lock Pro

There's more than one wi-fi lock that's worth mentioning on this list. Hailed as potentially the best smart lock out there is the August Smart Lock Pro.
The Smart Lock Pro is an amazing piece of technology, capable of linking up with your and unlocking the door when it's in range. It can even detect when the door isn't shut. This helps keep you safe and keep burglars out.
It also works with more systems than the Schlage Connect.
As advanced as this lock is, it's expensive, and it doesn't come as a whole unit. You need a deadbolt and a wi-fi adapter, neither of which are sold with the Smart Lock.

3. Kwikset 991 Juno

You don't need a high-tech digital lock to prevent break-ins. In the UK and the US, unlawful entry is a serious problem.
Unlawful entry is a legal term for when a burglar enters a house through an unlocked door. In the UK, this occurs in roughly 20% of burglaries. In the US, this jumps to one-third of all burglaries.
Some of the biggest issues are a lack of a security system and multiple entryways to the home. It's not uncommon for homeowners to forget to lock every door, but it is important.
A significant portion of burglaries can be prevented by having some sort of lock or security system in place, and the Juno is one of the best.
This lock comes with a deadbolt and doorknob, and is very difficult to get past. It was built to resist some of the most effective lock-picking tactics, and help the door stand up to being kicked.
Should you ever need to replace the lock, that's easy, too. This lock uses a Smartkey system that allows the locks to be redone with little time or hassle.
The lack of digital technology in this system has made it cheaper, with the price tag being around $40 or $50 dollars, while digital systems would be $100-$200.
It takes a bit more time and effort to install, but the benefits definitely outweigh the downsides.

4. Schlage B60N

The B60N is top-rated for security. Designed to foil both lock-picks and door kicks, this deadbolt will definitely stand up to most burglars. It's designed to stop bumps as well, which crosses off yet another means of entry.
Much like the Juno, it's affordable, costing less than $40 in some cases. It's also easy to install and use, so much so that it's accessible to those with disabilities.
If you're okay with an old-fashioned but functional lock, this may be the best choice for you.

5. Schlage Sense

The next entry on our list of the best locks is the Schlage Sense. Like many on this list, it comes with a keypad so you don't have to use a key to open or lock it. Once it's locked, it can stand up to lock-picking and blunt force, so getting in isn't easy.
Much like the Smart Lock Pro, the Sense can connect to a variety of different devices, including those made by Apple.
Perhaps the most brilliant feature of this lock is the built-in alarm system. If someone tries to open your lock, an alarm will be triggered on your phone or another remote device.
The Sense being the third entry by Schlage on our list, it says a lot for the company's credibility and reliability. Perhaps you should look for a Schlage the next time you go shopping for locks.

Why call a locksmith if I can do it myself?

Nothing is more rewarding than a DIY job well done.  You've achieved something and saved yourself money by not having to call a tradesman and the end result is spot on - Congratulations!! Or maybe the job didn't go to plan, you're now past the point of no return and in for the long haul.  In hindsight maybe calling a professional might have been a good idea but hey you've saved some cash and the result is OK (ish)!! Perhaps the worst has happened, you're in way over your depth and that seemingly simple job has now gone from bad to worse.  Any cash you saved by not getting a third party to do the job has now been spent on extras parts needed, the weekend is over and you're still there repeating the same process over and over again, maybe this time it'll work? We've all been there, mine most recently was snubbing the offer of a fitting service when buying a new bathroom floor.  I surfed the web a few youtube videos, yeah there's a few odd shap

Lock Snapping - What the homeowner needs to know
